For several weeks in the summer of 1996 in Paris, France, a group of African illegal immigrants occupied a Catholic church to protest the government’s decision to keep them out of the country and to publicize the plight of undocumented workers in France. The church was their sanctuary. As the days turned into weeks it became their home and battleground.
